Bacon and Cheese Dog Biscuits & The Dog-Takeover

bacon-and-cheese-dog-biscuits-the-dog-takeover

Enough is enough! It’s time for the under-appreciated pooches in this house to woof and be heard…without being hollered at. Today, in honor of National Dog Biscuit Day, we take over this blog and the kitchen!

We’ve patiently played your game of “sit” while we’ve watched you prepare drool-worthy morsels. And let’s just be honest, eating in front of us is, well, just plain rude!

Let’s not forget the HOURS of tirelessly hearing “stay” and “guard the house” as you peoples like to call it.

At the mere mention of “do you wanna go?” we rush to the car in anticipation of the next trip you’d take us on…a visit to our friendly veterinarian or not. Sometimes you even let us play like we were driving. Don’t get us started on how you speak in codes for the w-word (walk)! We know what you’re saying!!

Okay, okay…we admit it. We’ve enjoyed our car rides throughout the country side and the smells we’ve sniffed are beyond belief! We’ve even had a good wuff when one of the peoples was on poo-pick-up…hee…hee…hee Now, who’s a good peoples?!

At an enormous lawn with fancy yard ornaments…
or as the people call it, a Civil War battlefield somewhere down South.

But let’s get back on track here…you’ve taken advantage of our easy-going nature for the final time! We aren’t just here for your amusement!

But, now you’ve gone and done it! This little intruder takes the bone! Really, he does! And our bed to boot!

We’re tired of taking a back-seat to this, this…dare, we utter the dreaded word…cat! Phooey…it leaves a bad taste in our mouths. Even worse than the drowned turtle you fished out of the pond and we gulped down!

Your atonement for the years of injustices we’ve had to endure is simple. Bacon and Cheese Dog Biscuits! You should be able to make this happen, considering you’re touting yourself as a baker for the whole world to see…

Feed us something our favorite vet approves of and you can identify…crispy bacon, shredded cheese and sweet carrots in a whole wheat biscuit. We’ll now return to our usual…the good old sit and stay routine, and won’t object to you mixing up a batch of these tasty treats. Goooooood human!

Bacon and Cheese Dog Biscuits

Show your favorite Fido how much you love him/her with these tasty bacon and cheese biscuits!  Made with ingredients you can read and Fido’s vet approves of!

  • Author: Erin Thomas
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: About 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

3 tbsp. unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 tbsp. olive oil 1 egg 1 cup milk (whole or 2%) 1 carrot, grated* 3 cups whole wheat flour 1-1/2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded 1/4 cup cooked bacon, crumbled 1 tbsp. dried parsley or 3 tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.  Line two cookie/baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine butter, olive oil and egg. Add milk and grated carrot.  Add whole wheat flour to carrot mixture until just combined. Add the cheddar cheese, bacon and parsley.  Mix well. Turn dough onto a lightly floured board.  Knead the dough for about 30 seconds.  Roll the dough out until it’s about 1/2-inch thick. Use cookie cutters (preferably bone-shaped) to cut out dog biscuits. Arrange cut biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, about 1/2-inch apart.  The biscuits can be spaced closer together than regular cookies, since they won’t spread during the bake time. Bake for 23-27 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack.  Store biscuits in an air-tight container in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks.  Biscuits can also be frozen after cooling.

Notes

*1  grated apple (peeled and cored) can be substituted for the carrot.
