Bloomin’ Cheesy Sausage Pull-Apart Bread

IDK why, but it seems like we’ve been seeing a lot of the pizza delivery dude at our house. He seems to be dropping off an obscene number of pizzas and cheesy bread lately. So when I came across a recipe for pull-apart bread, I thought to myself…self…this is just what Son A would order (and it would save him some $$)! With some razzle-dazzling and garlicky upgrades, I present to you–Bloomin’ Cheesy Sausage Pull-Apart Bread!

This meal-in-a-loaf gets its name from those blooming onions that Outback Steak Houses sell. You know, the ones that open up into a pretty edible flower of sorts. To get started on this one, though, purchase a round loaf of bread from your local mega-mart’s bakery section. The type of loaf doesn’t particularly matter, but Pan de Campagne or sourdough bowls work amazing here! Cut the loaf into a grid with pieces about 1 inch in size. Then spread a combination of melted butter and garlic powder in between each cut layer.

Shredded cheeses, cooked and crumbled sausage, chopped pickled jalapeños, fresh garlic, and chopped green onion (aka scallions) get acquainted together in a bowl before being packed into the bread slices. You’ll want to stuff each nook and cranny full! To reach its bloomin’ baked status, the bread is baked twice–with and without an aluminum foil cover. Then enjoy hot out of the oven! Our pizza dude might just be missing trips to see our Minion after this!

  • Yield: 1 Hearty Loaf 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 loaf of round sourdough or white bakery bread

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

1 tsp. garlic powder

3 cups shredded cheese, about 8 ounces (We use the “Mexican” cheese blend.)

1 cup cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage**

1/4 cup pickled jalapeños, diced

3 cloves fresh garlic, minced

3 green onions (aka scallions), finely chopped

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.  Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.  Set aside.

Cut the round loaf into a grid or crosshatch pattern using a serrated bread knife.  Make cuts about 1-inch wide.  Do not cut the bread all the way through.   Mix the melted butter and garlic powder together.  Brush this mixture in between each cut in the bread.  Set aside the remaining butter.

In a large bowl, combine the shredded cheese, breakfast sausage, pickled jalapeños, minced garlic, and green onions.  Stuff the cheese mixture into each cut of the bread, working in layers going horizontally and vertically.  Be sure to place this mixture in between all bread cuts. Drizzle the remaining melted butter over the top of the bread loaf.  Cover with additional aluminum foil. Bake for 15 minutes.  Remove the aluminum foil and bake for an additional 12-15 minutes. The loaf will be browned and crisp, with melted cheese.  Enjoy warm!

Notes

**Swap out your favorite sausage here–Italian or Chorizo would be fabulous!
