Gearing Up for Turkey Day

gearing-up-for-turkey-day

Today’s a little different. I’ve listened to a lot of music on my i-Tunes collection…Chris Stapleton, the Commodores and Bee Gees, Fall Out Boy, Keith Urban, and Ed Sheeran. I made Minion B dance shamelessly with me in the kitchen before sending him off to the Kroger wolves for last minute food stuffs. I even picked up the Flabby Tabby to join in with the festivities, which ended in growling, yowling and clawing. After 8+ hours in the kitchen, the song of choice is Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2″ compilation. The lyrics are…

Mommy’s alright, Daddy’s alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender
But don’t give yourself away

This Turkey Day is prepped out and will roll out like always, but its aftermath will be completely different. Not in a bad way. Just not what we’re used to. The reason? Minion A is finally able to fly the coop. He really needs to! He’s spreading his aviation mechanic wings and moving to Arizona. But darn it…

I won’t get all goo-goo eyed because, well, ugly-crying is ugly for all those witnessing it. It really is. There’s running mascara, snotty noses, uncontrollable blubbering, and just general nastiness. So we won’t go there! (You’re welcome!)

I will go into how weird we are. After all, the great lyricists Cheap Trick said that mommy and daddy are alright, just a little weird on Turkey Days gone by. I can fully embrace this! Here goes!

Ten years ago, the Minions were dragged out into a Virginia field to make a farmer promo for a school project I was working on. They were so excited then.

The next year, the Brown Dog who we lost a year ago, dutifully watched as recipes were followed and turkeys were debauched.

A few years later, a Black Friday shopping spree showed a frisker side of Mom…

Family from up north reminisced on how wonderful it was to see each other after so many years apart…

A trip to Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” house made me glad I’m not a fan of anything white in my house. (Thanks Mom!)

The next year, we shot away the tryptophan slugs…

And just last year, we visited ol’ Jerry Lee Lewis’ place. Too bad we had to wake up his visiting grand-niece to give us a tour we paid for a month in advance. (Guess she forgot to take out the trash.)

So, yeah, I guess mommy and daddy are just a little weird. Let’s go with eclectic!

This year, we’re sticking with tradition. The menu looks like:

And darn it, if the next song playing isn’t Cat Steven’s “Father and Son,” with the words…

I was once like you are now
And I know that it’s not easy
To be calm when you’ve found
Something going on
But take your time, think a lot
Think of everything you’ve got
For you will still be here tomorrow
But your dreams may not

We know the Monk will do great! Guess that just means more road trips to new places!
