Winters in the midwest plains states can be long, cold and blustery. Every Christmas, Mom and Pop celebrated, after trudging over to the neighbor’s house through the snow and ice, with either a hot buttered rum or a Tom & Jerry. Like the responsible parents they were, I never partook in these delightfully warm drinks for alcoholic reasons. The idea of the drink “batter” necessary to make both recipes always threw me off. IDK.
As an adult, I now warm up to the holiday season with drinks like Hot Gingerbread Bourbon too. I jazzed up a standard hot buttered rum recipe with a few more spices and swapped out rum for The Hubby’s favorite brown liquid–bourbon! A pinch of ground cloves and a touch of molasses to this spiced butter-based batter gingerbreads this warm libation up. This batter stores in a tightly sealed container in your chill chest for up to 10 days, or up to 3 months in the freezer. To serve, mix equal parts of the batter, your favorite bourbon, and top with hot water in a mug. If you’re feeling especially festive, garnish with whipped cream and ground nutmeg. Cheers!
